Using ChatGPT, in your job application.
‘AI in recruitment: the death knell of the CV?‘
It opened with:
‘Generative technology is rebalancing the power dynamic towards applicants.‘
A very interesting angle I’d not considered before. I’d never viewed it as an applicant vs. recruiter dynamic. I’d viewed the recruitment process as applicant vs. applicant. After all, it is the other applicants you will have to beat to get the vacancy, the recruiter already has a job ;-).
Make no mistake, the UK tech junior role market is very competitive, we typically see 100-200 applications per vacancy. This is why we run workshops to help applicants understand and navigate the process better. Learn more Here
For some applicants using LLM’s and other generative content engines can be very useful. It could give them an answer they hadn’t considered, another view of the question or it might help them feel more confident.
The most useful ‘AI’ technology I’ve seen recently for improving you job application is ‘Read Aloud‘, find it in Word on the ‘Review’ tab or right click in Edge (or google search please don’t ask me!)
Hearing what you’ve actually written rather than what you think you’ve written is massive and IMHO the best use of AI in your job application.
I’ve also spent some time looking at Prepper from Adzuna Prepper | AI Practice Interview Questions | Adzuna.co.uk
You enter the job description you’ve applied for and it generates possible interview questions. A great addition to your interview prep. NOT a replacement for researching the company / the people involved etc…
Also IMHO their example answers are bobbins and should not be copied if you want to do well.
As with all new technology there is a risk that it will be used inappropriately, take the example below:
Online Screening Question: Why do you want to be a data analyst?
Becoming a data analyst can be an attractive career path for people who have a passion for problem-solving, statistics, and working with data. As a data analyst, you analyze data to uncover insights, trends, and patterns. You can work in a variety of industries, such as finance, healthcare, retail, marketing, and technology. The role of a data analyst is becoming increasingly important as companies use data to make more informed decisions. It’s a rewarding profession that enables you to contribute to business success and grow your skills in data analysis, programming, and communication.
The applicant has failed to answer the question and their application will not be progressed beyond this point.
The question asks i.e. Why do YOU want to be a data analyst.
It is expecting a 1st person response. I want to be….
Also the Americanisation of ‘Analyze’ and the tone of voice is a dead giveaway that this is generated content and not the words of an 18 year from Halesowen.
The key point to remember is that Generative LLM’s, ChatGPT etc.. are probabilistic using the most likely word to follow a previous word.
They are going to struggle to answer personal questions about you, only you can to that.
